Decay of the buildings
Over the centuries, the half-timbered facade of the Hornmoldhaus disappeared behind gray plaster. Simple half-timbering replaced the elaborate plank constructions of the original building. The mighty stone portal was partially bricked up and fitted with windows.
In the 19th century, the formerly stately town house had become a bakery with a bar. The interior design was changed accordingly, individual walls were moved, painted wall boards were inserted into the floor. The summer room was used in an unusual way as a coal store for the bakery. Modern modernization measures such as the installation of gas, electricity and water pipes were added.
In the 1970s, nothing of the old splendor was left to be seen. The city, which was now the owner, considered demolishing the Hornmoldhaus as part of the planned town hall extension.
