Use this link to view "47 Ronin" in detail, including translation. The application can also be viewed on a touch screen.

The basis of the game is a Japanese scroll, which the Bietigheim doctor Erwin von Baelz in the 19th century brought with him from Japan. It is part of the collection of the Stadtmuseum Hornmoldhaus. The computer application was developed at the Kultur-Hackathon CODING DA VINCI 2022 by Stadtmuseum Hornmoldhaus in cooperation with the Leipzig University Library as well as experts from the universities of Heidelberg and Würzburg.

Further digital records of our Baelz exhibits can be viewed via our online collection museum-digital:baden-württemberg. For more information about the project, visit our website under Completed Projects.

"Kawanabe Kyôsai" (1831-1889) - Werke des japanischen Künstlers in der Sammlung des Stadtmuseums Hornmoldhaus

Through this link you can see a virtual exhibition of works from the Baelz collection. Erwin von Baelz, a doctor from Bietigheim, spent 29 years in Japan and amassed a remarkable collection of around 6,000 objects by Japanese artists and craftsmen, including works by Kawanabe Kyōsai, some of which ended up in the collection of the Stadtmuseum Hornmoldhaus.

Kyōsai was born in 1831 and grew up in Edo, what is now Tokyo. His artistic talent was recognised early on, and at the age of seven he began an apprenticeship with the woodcutter Utagawa Kuniyoshi. During his further apprenticeship, he acquired an extensive repertoire of art styles by copying other works of art, which he later fell back on. He established himself as a self-employed painter, illustrator and graphic artist, producing caricatures and humorous images.

A publication on Baelz and Kyôsai has been published and a virtual exhibition of all Kyôsai's works in our Baelz collection is available.
