Paintings on walls and ceilings

The paintings in the Hornmoldhaus are an outstanding testimony to the lifestyle of the Renaissance. Images can be found in almost every room as wall decorations or ceiling ornaments. The thematic spectrum is broad, ranging from religious motifs and floral decorations to satirical criticism of the Catholic clergy. There is no other town house in Germany with such a richly decorated interior from this period.

There are two important paintings in the corridor on the second floor, in the upper corridor. One is the coat of arms of the Hornmold family. Unusually for a town house, the coat of arms of the Duke of Württemberg is located opposite. This close proximity documents the close relationship between Hornmold and his employer.

Conundrums with critical, often satirical content are typical art forms of the Renaissance. Similar motifs with sometimes identical inscriptions have been preserved on contemporary coins and medals. One of these probably served as a model for the depictions in the Sommerstube. Sebastian Hornmold, bailiff and first church council director in Württemberg, clearly expressed his political views here.
